PLUMBING VALVE REPAIRS

Another problem that arises with valves happens due to long periods of disuse. When you turn one of them off and then on again, it may develop a leak around its packing nut. To fix this, tighten the nut about half a turn with a wrench and the leak should stop.
Valves are found throughout your water supply system. One place that they can be seen is guarding the cold water supply to your hot water heater.
It is a good idea to tag each of the valves in your system so that every family member will be able to find the one they need if there is an emergency. Mark where the hot and cold water mains turn vertical to rise up through the house, and mark every time a pipe emerges from the walls beside a fixture. The purpose of the valves is always the same -- to shut off the water supply to a particular area of the house in the event there is need to shut it off, while still allowing water to continue servicing the rest of the system without disruption.
Unlike the DWV pipes, water supply lines do not need to have a large diameter, or even be very heavy. They can be made of galvanized steel, brass, or copper. They can also be plastic, although some local codes—fewer every year—prohibit the use of plastic pipe for the hot water line.
Normally, you will find the water supply pipes start their run through the house if you look up at the basement ceiling, where they are secured to the bottom of the joists with metal hangers. The mains are usually four inches in diameter. The lines that branch off of the mains are typically 1/2-inch pipes, which means that one fixture cannot carry all of the water that the main can carry. As the mains course through the house, they should be anchored every three feet or so, and should be at least six inches apart, so that the cold water cannot absorb heat from the hot water pipes. If the hot water line is wrapped in insulation, the pipes can be positioned closer to each other. Actually, if the hot water line is insulated, the water will also retain its temperature longer and reduce your water heating bills considerably.
